When we talk about water safety, the spotlight often shines on toddlers and backyard pools. But as kids grow, so do the risks and many parents don’t realize the danger shifts from the shallow end to open water.
This shift is known as The X Effect—a powerful concept from the LV Project that reveals a hidden truth:
While young children are more at risk in pools, teens face their highest risk of drowning in lakes, rivers, and oceans.
In fact, drowning rates triple at age 15 and the majority of those tragedies happen in natural water.
Even if your teen is a strong swimmer, open water presents a different challenge.
✔️Unpredictable currents.
✔️Drop-offs or hidden obstacles.
✔️And yes, teen overconfidence.
..all contribute to a deadly mix.
So how do we protect our big kids? With layers of protection designed just for them.
If your teen is kayaking, paddleboarding, boating or even just jumping off a dock, make sure they’re wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vest. It’s not about swimming skills. It’s about survival when nature throws the unexpected.
Have real conversations. Talk about rip currents, cold water shock, and why nature demands respect. Open water is not the same as a pool, and knowing the difference saves lives.
Just because they’re older doesn’t mean they’re invincible. Always make sure someone is watching, especially in unfamiliar or remote areas.
Water safety isn’t just for little kids. It’s for life.
As parents, educators, and swim professionals, we have the power to shift the narrative and equip teens with the tools they need to stay safe without missing out on fun.
